Mexico, Punta Cana, Jamaica or Aruba? Picking your winter beach destination

Once someone decides they want a warm-weather escape this winter, the next question is almost always "Where should we go?" Mexico's Caribbean coast, Punta Cana, Jamaica and Aruba come up again and again, and for good reason. They're all beautiful. But they're not interchangeable, and the right pick depends on what you want your days to look like.

Mexico's Caribbean coast: the most variety

Cancún, Playa del Carmen, the Riviera Maya and Tulum offer just about every kind of beach trip under one name: big all-inclusives, small boutique hotels, adults-only hideaways and family resorts with water parks. It's also one of the easiest places to reach, with flights from many U.S. cities.

What sets it apart is everything beyond the resort: swimming in cenotes, visiting Mayan ruins, snorkeling or diving off Cozumel, or wandering into town for dinner. It's a great fit if you like a mix of lounging and exploring, or if your group has very different ideas of a perfect day.

Punta Cana: the classic all-inclusive week

Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, is built around long stretches of soft, palm-lined beach and large all-inclusive resorts. The airport is close to the main resort areas, so you can go from plane to pool without a long drive.

Most people here are happy to stay put and let the resort do the work, which makes it a wonderful choice for a true do-nothing vacation, a family trip or a big group celebrating together. If you want lots of culture and day trips, it's possible, but it's not really the main event.

Jamaica: personality and atmosphere

Jamaica feels unmistakably like Jamaica, from the music to the food to the warmth of the people. Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios each have a different flavor: Negril is known for its long beach and sunsets, Ocho Rios for waterfalls and lush scenery, and Montego Bay for convenience near the airport.

Jamaica also has some excellent all-inclusives, including well-known adults-only and couples resorts. One thing to plan around: drive times from the airport to some areas can be longer than people expect, so where you stay matters.

Aruba: dry, breezy and easy to explore

Aruba is the one people choose when they want the most dependable sunshine. It's a dry island with a steady breeze, calm beaches on the west coast, and a rugged, desert-like landscape on the other side. English is widely spoken, and it's easy to get around.

It has fewer all-inclusives than the others, and many visitors stay at a hotel and try different restaurants around the island instead. That makes it a lovely choice for couples and travelers who enjoy going out to eat and don't want to feel tied to one resort.

A few questions to narrow it down

And whichever you choose, check that everyone's passport is valid well beyond your travel dates before you book.
